Egypt’s interior ministry has approved requests by 44 Egyptians to acquire a foreign nationality without retaining their Egyptian citizenship.

The decision was published in Egypt’s official gazette on Wednesday.

The ministry explained that the decision comes per the constitution and Nationality Law 26 of 1975, which regulates nationality status.

The ministry said that the individuals who received approval include those who seek to become citizens of Germany, Austria, Lithuania, Norway, The Netherlands, Kuwait, China, Taiwan, Oman and Japan.

Article 10 of the Nationality Law stipulates that an Egyptian citizen who fails to obtain prior permission from the Ministry of Interior to acquire a foreign nationality would continue to be considered by the authorities as a citizen of Egypt.
