Gambians have called on the Constitutional Review Commission to look into the issue of citizenship when writing a new constitution for The Gambia.

Ida Joof, a native of Prince village in Upper Niumi, North Bank Region urged the commission to look into the issue of citizenship, saying they should ensure that anyone born in The Gambia becomes an automatic citizen irrespective of the nationality of their parents.

She added: “It is disheartening for someone to be born in The Gambia to a foreigner parents and does his/her education up to university, never leave the country, and yet cannot have citizenship.”

Madam Joof made these remarks on Thursday 25th of October, 2018 during the first meeting of the two weeks civic education public sensitisation campaign organised by National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) in partnership with the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) meant to prepare and set the ground for the public consultations proper across the country.
