Kenya: Wajir South ex-MP Sirat to answer citizenship charge

Former Wajir South MP Mahmud Sirat has been ordered to answer to charges of obtaining Kenyan citizenship falsely.

Nairobi chief magistrate Lucy Mbugua made the ruling yesterday after Sirat’s lawyer Kethi Kilonzo applied for more time awaiting a Court of Appeal decision on an application challenging his prosecution.

The politician is required to present himself before the Nairobi chief magistrate on September 3 and answer two counts of indictment, which were first filed by the Immigration Department on February 9, 2010.

The Immigration Department had filed the case against the former MP, alleging he is Australian but he says he is Kenyan.
