Malunga’s Public Protector candidacy in doubt over security clearance

CAPE TOWN – Deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga’s candidacy to succeed Thuli Madonsela may be sunk by a warning from the State Security Agency on Thursday that he does not have top secret level security clearance.

It emerged half an hour before Malunga was set to be interviewed by the parliamentary committee that shortlisted 14 candidates, that MPs had received a letter from the intelligence service informing them that Malunga lacked the required level of clearance.
