President Yoweri Museveni has promised to sit and discuss with the NRM parliamentary caucus on the possibility of amending the constitution to add Indians as an indigenous tribe.

Museveni, while meeting the Indian community in Uganda on Wednesday in Entebbe, said the amendment shouldn’t be a problem given how Indians over the decades have become part of the Ugandan society.

“Sociologically, you already have a tribe here, and all we need is to accept the reality and put it in the constitution,” Museveni said., “Your internal differences (tribal groupings) are none of our business; after all, even the African groups also have their own clans.”

“So, I am going to take it up in our caucus. Logically it is clear that you are now part of us here,” Museveni added.
