South Africa: Stateless – At the Musina Girl’s Shelter

Seven out of ten foreign children in state care in South Africa are undocumented, and many crossed borders into the country without adult supervision. This is according to a 2019 study by the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town. Seventy percent of these children are at risk of statelessness – a limbo in which no country in the world recognises them as citizens. Jamaine Krige and Yeshiel Panchia visited a shelter in Musina, near the Beitbridge border in Limpopo, where many of the children find themselves once they have crossed into the country….
