South Africa: Stateless children: Falling through the cracks of citizenship laws

There is great misinformation surrounding statelessness and particularly the rights of children in this respect. Lusungu Kanyama Phiri works at Lawyers for Human Rights and is concentrated on their statelessness project. Phiri laments that “there’s no legislation that protects stateless people or those who are at risk of being stateless”.  There appears to be a disconnect between South Africa’s practice and the multiple UN Conventions, to which the country is a signatory, that seek to protect against statelessness.  In this three-minute video some of the issues surrounding this growing problem are addressed.
