This Is Home is a campaign that documents the lives of inspiring young people in South Africa who are stateless or at risk of becoming stateless. The campaign provides explainers on statelessness and practical solutions for The Department of Home Affairs to implement to prevent statelessness.

At the time of filming Esther was joined to her mother’s refugee status. She fears being de-linked from her mother’s file now that she is over 18 years old. Esther has the possibility of being joined to her father’s permanent residence permit, however, this needs to be done by the age of 21. With the permanent residence section of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) being closed for close to two years now this is becoming an unlikely possibility.
