ZAMBIA has become the first country in the SADC region to come up with a National Action Plan to eradicate statelessness in the country.
This is five years after the global campaign aimed at eradicating statelessness around the world was launched.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, with endorsement from high-profile supporters around the world, in November 2014 launched a global campaign aimed at ending the devastating legal limbo of statelessness, which affects millions of people around the world.
In response to the global campaign, the newly formed National Taskforce on Eradicating Statelessness in Zambia comprising members from Department of National Registration Passport and Citizenship (DNRPC), Commissioner of Refugees (COR), Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), International Organisation for Migration (IOM), University of Zambia (UNZA) and UNHCR has held its first stakeholders meeting to come up with a National Action Plan, making Zambia the first State in the SADC region to come up with a plan on this initiative.
