567 resume Botswana citizenship

On Thursday, the minister of Labour and Home Affairs Edwin Batshu said the Department of Immigration and Citizenship has, this year, approved 567 applications from people wishing to resume their Botswana citizenship.

He said in 2010, the department approved 213 resumption applications, while 106 applications were approved in 2009.
Recently, while applying for the new e-passports, a number of people were left in shock when they found out they were not regarded as legal Batswana citizens.
The minister said people who enjoy dual citizenship are expected to renounce their other citizenship when they reach 21 years in order to become Batswana. Such people are issued with a restricted Omang card up to 21 years to allow them to renounce the other citizenship.
