Cost of biometric passport causes public anger

The cost for a proposed new passport has sparked public anger in Sierra Leone after the Immigration department announced it was preparing a new, biometric passport to replace the current one with a cost of Le500, 000 (US$100).Many say the money, representing 500% increment, is too excessive.

Since the announcement recently, criticism in the media has exploded and a civil society organization took the lead in condemning the move and calling for a reversal of the decision.

The Immigration Department cited the cost involved in printing the document for the hike in price.
