{"id":1528,"date":"2016-06-20T12:27:31","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T12:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test.hennhoneyball.com\/somalia\/"},"modified":"2020-10-21T09:34:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T09:34:02","slug":"somalia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/east-africa\/somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"Somalia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--Replace this line with additional country information.-->The determination of Somali citizenship is complicated by the fact that Somalia has lacked functioning governing institutions for the past decades.<\/p>\n<p>However, citizenship in Somalia is nominally regulated by the country\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/law-no-28-of-22-december-1962-on-somali-citizenship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1962 citizenship law,<\/a> which provides that citizenship can be provided to anyone whose father is Somali or who is ethnically Somali and who renounces claim to any other nationality. In practice, Somalis may in some cases be considered stateless as a result of the lack of capacity of the Somali state to offer protection. (See <a href=\"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/de-jure-statelessness-in-the-real-world-applying-the-prato-summary-conclusions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">De Jure Statelessness in the Real World: Applying the Prato Summary Conclusions<\/a>). While the 1962 law does not permit dual nationality, the <a href=\"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/somalia-provisional-constitution-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provisional constitution of 2012 <\/a>does allow Somalis to hold another nationality.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the region of Somaliland adopted legislation relating to citizenship in <a href=\"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/somaliland-citizenship-law-2002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2002<\/a>. This legislation confers citizenship on persons whose father was a descendent of a person resident on the territory in 1960.
