{"id":14802,"date":"2017-10-02T19:53:07","date_gmt":"2017-10-02T19:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=14802"},"modified":"2017-10-29T20:03:17","modified_gmt":"2017-10-29T20:03:17","slug":"the-right-to-citizenship-in-egypts-age-of-terror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/the-right-to-citizenship-in-egypts-age-of-terror\/","title":{"rendered":"The Right to Citizenship in Egypt\u2019s Age of Terror"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: Mai El-Sadany<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after President Abdel-Fattah El Sisi <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/277355\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Human-rights-in-Egypt-shouldnt-be-judged-from-West.aspx\">suggested<\/a> at a side meeting of the United Nations General Assembly that the state of human rights in Egypt should not be judged from a Western perspective, Egypt\u2019s cabinet gathered to approve a set of draft laws, one of which violates the right of Egyptians to their nationality in a completely unprecedented manner.<\/p>\n<p>On September 20, 2017, the cabinet approved draft amendments to Law No. 26 of 1975 Concerning Egyptian Nationality that, if ultimately approved by the parliament and ratified by the president,<a href=\"https:\/\/timep.org\/commentary\/the-right-to-citizenship-in-egypts-age-of-terror\/?utm_source=Project+on+Middle+East+Democracy+-+All+Contacts&amp;utm_campaign=ad7c70ce9a-Egypt_Daily_Update_Sept_28_2017&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_75a06056d7-ad7c70ce9a-215964169&amp;mc_cid=ad7c70ce9a&amp;mc_eid=2296d8156f#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> would set forth a number of additional circumstances in which an individual\u2019s citizenship may be withdrawn by Egyptian authorities.
