{"id":19308,"date":"2012-01-28T19:49:27","date_gmt":"2012-01-28T19:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=19308"},"modified":"2018-07-17T19:51:59","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T19:51:59","slug":"opinion-libyas-dual-divide-expatriates-arent-welcome-in-the-new-libya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/opinion-libyas-dual-divide-expatriates-arent-welcome-in-the-new-libya\/","title":{"rendered":"Opinion: Libya\u2019s dual divide: Expatriates Aren\u2019t Welcome in the \u201cNew Libya&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <em>Ibrahim El Mayet<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A clause in Libya\u2019s draft election laws which excludes Libyans with multiple nationalities from running for public office unless they are willing to give up their other nationality, a requirement which would be unacceptable in Europe, has polarised opinion in Libya and raised serious questions about citizenship and identity in the \u201cNew Libya\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of Libyans are dual nationals largely as a result of persecution by the Gaddafi regime which forced thousands of Libyan politicians, activists, academics, writers and business people into exile. During Gaddafi\u2019s 42 years in power new generations of Libyans were born, raised and educated abroad. The UK is home to the largest population of Libya\u2019s diaspora including 4,000 Libyan doctors.
