China is a top investor in the east African country, accounting for as <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.monitor.co.ug\/Business\/Business\/Chinese--dragon--on-the-hunt-in-Uganda\/2471012-3310070-format-xhtml-n5l1dc\/index.html\">much as half<\/a>\u00a0of total foreign investment between\u00a02014 and 2015, according to the Uganda Investment Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_92842 africa\">But according to Ugandan immigration officials, there\u2019s one major downside: an increasing number of Chinese men are marrying Ugandan women to gain residency and continue their business interests in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_92842 africa\">Officials told\u00a0a parliamentary committee in late November that they are seeing more and more Chinese-Ugandan couples, often in sham unions.\u00a0Couples\u00a0are normally interviewed before spousal status is granted and Chinese men involved in sham\u00a0marriages are deported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_92842 africa\">\u201cBut we have many who are marrying and even producing\u2026 Even our Ugandan women are accepting\u00a0to [reproduce]\u00a0with these men,\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntv.co.ug\/news\/local\/21\/nov\/2016\/chinese-nationals-increasingly-marrying-ugandan-women-bid-gain-citizenship#sthash.cNHaPZHU.dpuf\">an official<\/a> from Uganda\u2019s\u00a0directorate of citizenship and immigration control told the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_92842 africa\">Read further: <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/africa\/857156\/uganda-is-worried-about-the-number-of-chinese-men-marrying-their-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/qz.com\/africa\/857156\/uganda-is-worried-about-the-number-of-chinese-men-marrying-their-women\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Lily Kuo Contractors, petty traders, investors, and entrepreneurs from China have been pouring into Uganda for the past decade.
