Il met en lumi\u00e8re les tensions li\u00e9es au moment crucial de la transition \u00ab\u00a0num\u00e9rique\u00a0\u00bb. Il illustre \u00e9galement la mani\u00e8re dont les citoyens \u00e0 la fois contestent et n\u00e9gocient les nouvelles proc\u00e9dures d\u2019inclusion dans le fichier national des titres d\u2019identit\u00e9 dits \u00ab\u00a0s\u00e9curis\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb. L\u2019exp\u00e9rience mauritanienne montre que, loin d\u2019\u00eatre comme on le pense souvent une simple op\u00e9ration technique neutre et apolitique, la digitalisation des identit\u00e9s en Afrique est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 largement affect\u00e9e par les conditions sociales de sa mise en \u0153uvre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on qualitative data collected during fieldwork conducted in Mauritania between 2010 and 2017, this paper seeks to reconstruct, including from below, the processes through which this country implemented a new biometric identification system under highly controversial circumstances. It illustrates the ways in which local citizens simultaneously negotiate and challenge the newly established procedures of inclusion in the so-called \u201csecure\u201d national identity card register. Further, the paper illuminates in particular the tensions that arose in the wake of this \u201cbiometric transition.\u201d Based on this case study, the author argues that, contrary to a widely held assumption, the process of digitalization of personal identities in Africa is anything but a technical, neutral, and apolitical operation.
