In August 2019, Nigerian newspaper New Telegraph\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtelegraphng.com\/2019\/08\/experts-nigerias-population-is-unknown\/\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cabout 70% of the children born annually in Nigeria are not registered at birth\u201d. It attributed the statistic to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/nigeria\/\">UN Children\u2019s Fund<\/a>(Unicef).
