{"id":25799,"date":"2014-05-20T19:01:48","date_gmt":"2014-05-20T19:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=25799"},"modified":"2019-12-23T19:06:59","modified_gmt":"2019-12-23T19:06:59","slug":"egypt-wants-to-revoke-hamas-leaders-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/egypt-wants-to-revoke-hamas-leaders-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt Wants to Revoke Hamas Leader&#8217;s Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Egypt is working to revoke the citizenship of Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar, a senior official told <em>Al Arabiya<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Major General Hussein Ridi, Assistant Interior Minister for Passports and Citizenship, a proposal to revoke the citizenship of al-Zahar and 11 members of his family has been submitted to the Cabinet for approval.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for the request, he told <em>Al Arabiya<\/em>, is proof that al-Zahar and his family are members of an organization that has been working \u201cto undermine Egypt\u2019s economic and social system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Al-Zahar is one of 8,000 Palestinian Arabs who were given Egyptian citizenship during the reign of ousted former president, Mohammed Morsi.
