{"id":266,"date":"2015-01-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test.hennhoneyball.com\/kenyas-security-act-threatens-refugees\/"},"modified":"2018-05-25T07:12:20","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T07:12:20","slug":"kenyas-security-act-threatens-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/kenyas-security-act-threatens-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya\u2019s security act threatens refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Human rights groups are warning that Kenya\u2019s controversial Security Amendment Act still poses a threat to refugees\u2019 rights despite a high court decision on Friday that suspends parts of the bill for 30 days pending a full court hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension included a section of the wide-ranging bill, popularly known as the \u2018anti-terror\u2019 law, that amended Kenya\u2019s Refugees Act. The amendment stipulates that, \u201cthe number of refugees and asylum seekers permitted to stay in Kenya shall not exceed 150,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently there are over 600,000 refugees, asylum seekers and stateless people living in Kenya, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).<\/p>\n<p>Although the cap of 150,000 can be reset by the National Assembly, rights groups fear that the new amendment will result in large numbers of refugees being forcibly returned.
