{"id":27814,"date":"2020-07-24T17:03:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T17:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=27814"},"modified":"2020-07-26T17:05:04","modified_gmt":"2020-07-26T17:05:04","slug":"kenyan-mp-demands-accountability-for-stateless-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/kenyan-mp-demands-accountability-for-stateless-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenyan MP demands accountability for stateless youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Rachel Sherman<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-background\"><em>In April, Coda Story\u2019s Keren Weitzberg wrote about the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codastory.com\/authoritarian-tech\/kenya-biometrics-double-registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>biometric registration system<\/em><\/a><em> in Kenya and the \u201cdouble registered\u201d ethnic Somali Kenyans left in limbo without ID cards.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s biometric system was intended to reduce incidences of \u201cdouble registration\u201d\u00a0 \u2014 a problem that mainly affects ethnic Somalis with Kenyan citizenship who falsely registered as refugees in the 1990s in order to receive vital food aid. However, tens of thousands are still in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, member of parliament Aden Duale denounced Fred Matiang\u2019i, the nation\u2019s interior cabinet secretary, demanding an explanation for why 20,000 Kenyans are still ineligible for identification cards, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-star.co.ke\/news\/2020-07-20-duale-takes-on-matiangi-over-delayed-ids-for-18500-kenyan-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">18,500 stateless youths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Garissa County, which Duale represents, has some of the highest numbers of double registrants in Kenya and is home to one of the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codastory.com\/disinformation\/coronavirus-kenya-refugee-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">largest refugee camps<\/a>.
