{"id":35297,"date":"2022-03-14T10:13:18","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T10:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=35297"},"modified":"2022-03-15T10:24:29","modified_gmt":"2022-03-15T10:24:29","slug":"biometrics-registration-for-zambias-new-national-id-system-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/biometrics-registration-for-zambias-new-national-id-system-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"Biometrics registration for Zambia\u2019s new national ID system underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ayang Macdonald<\/p>\n<p>Zambia\u2019s parliament has been told that work to put in place a new biometric ID system dubbed the Integrated National Registration Information System (INRIS) has started, with the biometrics of at least 15,000 Zambians already captured for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daily-mail.co.zm\/k1bn-biometric-id-issuance-starts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zambia Daily Mail<\/a>, parliament was informed during a recent briefing that the system, once effectively implemented, will ensure the production of ID cards with advanced security features.<\/p>\n<p>The report quotes Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu as saying in a ministerial statement that biometric ID documents to be issued under the INRIS scheme include national registration cards, as well as birth and death certificates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe INRIS will assign a national identity number at birth as opposed to when a citizen is 16 years old.
