{"id":41917,"date":"2024-11-24T16:01:51","date_gmt":"2024-11-24T16:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=41917"},"modified":"2024-11-26T16:03:52","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T16:03:52","slug":"gupta-sons-south-african-citizenship-revoked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/gupta-sons-south-african-citizenship-revoked\/","title":{"rendered":"Gupta son&#8217;s South African citizenship revoked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Dawie Boonzaaier<\/p>\n<p>The son of fugitive Ajay Gupta has lost his South African citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber sent a letter to Kamal Singhala on Thursday, indicating that he had decided to revoke his citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>He also ordered Singhala to hand over his naturalisation certificate to his office.<\/p>\n<p>This follows inconsistencies found by Schreiber\u2019s team in the department in the granting of Singhala\u2019s citizenship in 2015. Singhala\u2019s initial application for South African citizenship was rejected on 22 January 2015, by then minister Malusi Gigaba, based on a recommendation from the department\u2019s review committee.<\/p>\n<p>However, nine months later, on 1 September 2015, Gigaba approved a second application from Singhala.
