{"id":42222,"date":"2025-03-17T16:54:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T16:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=42222"},"modified":"2025-03-18T16:56:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T16:56:00","slug":"advocates-pick-privacy-inclusion-holds-in-kenyas-maisha-namba-digital-id-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/en\/advocates-pick-privacy-inclusion-holds-in-kenyas-maisha-namba-digital-id-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocates pick privacy, inclusion holds in Kenya\u2019s Maisha Namba digital ID system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ayang Macdonald<\/p>\n<p>Fresh concerns have been raised about issues of data privacy, security and exclusion in relation to Kenya\u2019s Maisha Namba digital ID project.<\/p>\n<p>The arguments were put forth recently during a court hearing in a matter brought against the Kenyan government by some digital rights advocacy organizations, The Standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/national\/article\/2001513612\/experts-tell-court-maisha-namba-discriminative-threat-to-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Haki na Sheria and the Katiba Institute filed separate cases against the Kenyan government in 2023 over the new digital ID system, citing major constitutional and human rights infringements.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in a testimony during a High Court session as expert witnesses, international lawyer, Prof Laura Bingham, and senior researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biometricupdate.com\/tag\/privacy-international\">Privacy International<\/a>, Dr Thomas Fisher, argued that the ID system presents several shortcomings in the areas of privacy, data security, and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Bingham, for example, said unlike the government\u2019s claims, the ID system has a centralized data repository which could potentially be used as a surveillance tool to crack down on dissenting voices.<\/p>\n<p>Read further: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biometricupdate.com\/202503\/advocates-pick-privacy-inclusion-holds-in-kenyas-maisha-namba-digital-id-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.biometricupdate.com\/202503\/advocates-pick-privacy-inclusion-holds-in-kenyas-maisha-namba-digital-id-system<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Ayang Macdonald Fresh concerns have been raised about issues of data privacy, security and exclusion in relation to Kenya\u2019s Maisha Namba digital ID project.
