Namibia\u2019s journey toward national development and prosperity is inextricably linked with its wealth and pained past. One dark chapter\u2014often hidden from view but deeply significant\u2014is the forced displacement and brain drain of people from the land now called Namibia through transatlantic and regional slave trading between the 1500s and 1860s.<\/p>\n
Between the 1500s and 1860s, thousands of Namibians\u2014especially from the north and bordering areas of Angola\u2014were sold as slaves on the global market. Traded for guns, alcohol, and other goods, their identities were erased and futures stolen. The strongest, smartest, and most skilled were among those taken, contributing to the economies and industrial revolutions of other countries. This tragic period of forced migration served as an early form of brain drain, depriving Namibia of human resources that could have accelerated its own socioeconomic development.<\/p>\n
