Acquisition of Citizenship by Operation of Law<\/p>\n<p>Any person: a) whose father is a Somali citizen; b) who is a Somali residing in the territory of the Somali Republic or abroad and declares to be willing to renounce any status as citizen or subject of a foreign country shall be a Somali Citizen by operation of law.<\/p>\n<p>Article 3. Definition of &#8220;Somali&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the purpose of this law, any person who by origin, language or tradition belongs to the Somali Nation shall be considered a &#8220;Somali&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page10R_mcid14\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Article 15. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Minors in Special Circumstances<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page10R_mcid17\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">1. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Any minor who is a child of unknown parents and was born in the territory of the Somali <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Republic, shall be considered a Somali citizen, provided that he has not acquired a foreign <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">citizenship or the status as subject of a foreign country. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page10R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page10R_mcid23\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">2.<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"> Any child of u<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">nknown parents found in the territory of the Somali Republic shall be <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">presumed, until the contrary is proved, to have been born in the territory of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Somali Republic<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Download\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/1962\/12\/Somalia-Citizenship-Law-1962-full.pdf\">here<\/a> (Complete text as made available by Somalilandlaw, correcting some errors and omissions in previous versions in circulation; italicised text reflects corrections made).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Original post-independence law, still in force; incompatible with some aspects of 2012 constitution (especially on dual nationality).
