THE Federal Executive Council(FEC) yesterday approved Nigerian citizenship for 119 applicants.
The council, presided over by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, also approved the creation of procurement departments in all ministries, departments and agencies.
Under the new arrangement, the procurement department will take over the functions of Tenders Board Secretariat which presently oversees the Planning, Research and Statistics Department while the Supplies Division of the Human Resources Department in government agencies will cease to exist.
Briefing State House correspondents after the council’s meeting in Abuja, Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. John Odey, said approval of the citizenship for 119 applicants was a sequel to their clearance by security agencies.
The minister said: “Council at its meeting today (yesterday), considered and approved the recommendations for the grant of Nigerian citizenship by naturalisation to 70 applicants. It also approved the grant of Nigeria citizenship by registration to 49 applicants married to Nigerians who met all the constitutional requirements.”
He said certificates of naturalisation would be issued to the applicants, adding that “the successful candidates will have to meet certain conditions within 12 months of receipt of their notification.”
On the other decentralisation of procurement, the minister said all ministries and agencies had been directed to begin the implementation of the policy with effect from the 2008 financial year.
