The passport is meant to make travel on the continent much easier for Africans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scene seems to be set to realize the dream of visa-free travel for African citizens within their own continent by 2020,\u201d the AU said in <a href=\"http:\/\/au.int\/en\/pressreleases\/30770\/african-union-set-launch-e-passport-july-summit-rwanda\">a statement<\/a> announcing the launch.<\/p>\n<p>Travel in Africa is difficult for most Africans. They are required to have visas for over half of the countries on the continent. Only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afdb.org\/fileadmin\/uploads\/afdb\/Documents\/Generic-Documents\/Africa_Visa_Openness_Report_2016.pdf\">13 African countries<\/a> (pdf) allow other Africans to enter without a visa or give visas on arrival. In contrast, Americans can travel to <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/632302\/ghana-is-about-to-make-travel-in-africa-easier-for-africans\/\">20 African countries<\/a> without visas or with visas on arrival.<\/p>\n<p>African travelers say they feel the same <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/641025\/the-trials-restrictions-and-costs-of-traveling-in-africa-if-youre-an-african\/\">suspicion at immigration counters<\/a> within the continent as they do outside of it. Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian businessman and Africa\u2019s wealthiest man, was himself once <a href=\"http:\/\/m.mgafrica.com\/article\/2016-03-27-africa-and-its-visa-regime-headachewhere-even-dangote-sized-big-fish-have-nightmares\">turned away<\/a> by South African immigration officials as he struggled to locate his passport.
