{"id":14962,"date":"2017-11-01T10:44:52","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T10:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=14962"},"modified":"2017-11-03T10:47:16","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T10:47:16","slug":"call-for-nationality-law-reforms-for-gender-equality-in-middle-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/fr\/call-for-nationality-law-reforms-for-gender-equality-in-middle-east\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Nationality Law Reforms for Gender Equality in Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a first for the region, government representatives and civil society leaders from across the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region <a href=\"http:\/\/equalnationalityrights.org\/images\/zdocs\/Final-Declaration-Arab-Conference-on-Nationality-GCENR-translation-clean.pdf\">call for nationality law reforms to end discrimination against women<\/a>, following a regional convening at the League of Arab States. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cConference for Arab States on Good Practices &amp; Regional Opportunities to Strengthen Women\u2019s Nationality Rights,\u201d cosponsored by the United Nations Refugee Agency, UN Women, UNICEF, and the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights, was held October 1-2, 2017 at the League of Arab States in Cairo, and resulted in a groundbreaking and ambitious outcome statement (<a href=\"http:\/\/equalnationalityrights.org\/images\/zdocs\/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ArabStatesNationalityOutcomeDocument.pdf\">Arabic<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/equalnationalityrights.org\/images\/zdocs\/Final-Declaration-Arab-Conference-on-Nationality.pdf\">English<\/a>), endorsed by the Secretary General of the Arab League.<\/p>\n<p>The statement calls on Arab League Member States to uphold equal nationality rights for all citizens, regardless of gender, and to nominate national focal points to brief the Arab League on this issue.\u00a0 While gender-discriminatory nationality laws persist in many regions, the highest concentration \u2013 19 out of 52 countries (36%) \u2013 is in the MENA region.
