{"id":21946,"date":"2019-02-27T09:27:28","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T09:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=21946"},"modified":"2019-02-27T09:29:28","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T09:29:28","slug":"zimbabwe-govt-to-amend-dual-citizenship-provisions-to-align-with-the-constitution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/fr\/zimbabwe-govt-to-amend-dual-citizenship-provisions-to-align-with-the-constitution\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe: Govt To Amend Dual Citizenship Provisions To Align With The Constitution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cabinet has approved principles for the amendment of the Zimbabwe Citizenship Bill as Government works on ensuring that people born in the country are granted dual citizenship in line with the new Constitution adopted in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Briefing journalists after yesterday\u2019s Cabinet meeting, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the proposed changes included renaming of the Citizenship of Zimbabwe Act as the Zimbabwe Citizenship Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing presentation by the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Cabinet approved the principles for the amendment of the Zimbabwe Citizenship Bill as part of the ongoing process of aligning the country\u2019s laws to the provisions of the Constitution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKey provisions of the amendment include permitting of dual citizenship for citizens by birth, establishment of a Zimbabwe Citizenship and Immigration Board to, inter alia oversee the granting and revocation of citizenship by descent or registration and prohibition of dual citizenship for citizens by descent and registration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proposed changes also want to make it a requirement for applications for citizenship by registration to have resided in Zimbabwe for 10 years contrary to the current requirement of five years.<\/p>\n<p>Read further: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimeye.net\/2019\/02\/27\/govt-to-amend-dual-citizenship-provisions-to-align-with-the-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.zimeye.net\/2019\/02\/27\/govt-to-amend-dual-citizenship-provisions-to-align-with-the-constitution\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cabinet has approved principles for the amendment of the Zimbabwe Citizenship Bill as Government works on ensuring that people born in the country are granted dual citizenship in line with the new Constitution adopted in 2013.
