{"id":23305,"date":"2019-07-16T20:08:46","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T20:08:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=23305"},"modified":"2019-07-16T20:08:46","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T20:08:46","slug":"zimbabwe-mr-registrar-general-let-the-people-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/fr\/zimbabwe-mr-registrar-general-let-the-people-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe: Mr Registrar-General, let the people go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guest column: Paul Kaseke<\/p>\n<p>For some time now, Zimbabweans have not been able to renew their passports or obtain new ones due to what the Registrar-General\u2019s office has termed \u2018an acute shortage of passport paper\u2019. <span id=\"more-3096224744027082\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">It almost seems like the RG\u2019s office has become like the biblical Pharaoh, who would not let the Israelites leave Egypt.<\/div>\n<p>In this edition, we explore the legal position on this matter and what the State\u2019s obligations are in this respect.<\/p>\n<p>I should start by pointing out that the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission has already described the situation as a violation of human rights and has promised to investigate the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Many people are wondering why the commission would link the passport saga to a violation of human rights. Surely, the issuing of passports for people to travel is not a basic right and seems more like a luxury.<\/p>\n<p>No, that is not so.
