Police<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Ah0dmLedEY&amp;t=71s\" data-versionurl=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190808062231\/https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Ah0dmLedEY&amp;t=71s\" data-versiondate=\"2019-08-08T06:22:33+00:00\" data-amber-behavior=\"\"><span class=\"s1\"> say<\/span><\/a> Kabendera had failed to obey a summons to investigate the status of his Tanzanian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last week, police searched Kabendera\u2019s home twice, confiscated his passport and other personal documents and interrogated his family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">By August 5, authorities switched track, charging Kabendera with money laundering, tax evasion in the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/topNews\/idAFKCN1UV1QF-OZATP\" data-versionurl=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190808055829\/https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/topNews\/idAFKCN1UV1QF-OZATP\" data-versiondate=\"2019-08-08T05:58:30+00:00\" data-amber-behavior=\"\">$75,000<\/a> United States dollars, and criminal racketeering, according to a copy of the charge sheet obtained by the Committee to Protect Journalists. Police say Kabendera committed these crimes over a four-year period beginning in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With these charges, Kabendera may face up to 15 years in prison and can not seek bail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Citizenship targeted as tool for repression<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kabendera\u2019s family says this is not the first time the Tanzanian government has questioned Kabendera\u2019s citizenship. In 2013, authorities lobbed a similar charge against him but the case was later dismissed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecitizen.co.tz\/news\/Officials-to-pay-the-price\/1840340-1868012-10k8v07z\/index.html\" data-versionurl=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190808060537\/https:\/\/www.thecitizen.co.tz\/news\/Officials-to-pay-the-price\/1840340-1868012-10k8v07z\/index.html\" data-versiondate=\"2019-08-08T06:05:40+00:00\" data-amber-behavior=\"\"><span class=\"s1\">according to The Citizen<\/span><\/a>. Kabendera felt at the time that authorities called his citizenship into question as a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fco.gov.uk\/erickkabendera\/2013\/05\/02\/case-study-tanzania\/\" data-versionurl=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190808060728\/https:\/\/blogs.fco.gov.uk\/erickkabendera\/2013\/05\/02\/case-study-tanzania\/\" data-versiondate=\"2019-08-08T06:07:29+00:00\" data-amber-behavior=\"\"><span class=\"s1\">silence<\/span><\/a> him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, The Citizen also reported on several other cases where the government used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecitizen.co.tz\/news\/Is-citizenship-a-tool-to-silence-critics\/1840340-4698028-9sfarcz\/index.html\" data-versionurl=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190808060934\/https:\/\/www.thecitizen.co.tz\/news\/Is-citizenship-a-tool-to-silence-critics\/1840340-4698028-9sfarcz\/index.html\" data-versiondate=\"2019-08-08T06:09:36+00:00\" data-amber-behavior=\"\"><span class=\"s1\">citizenship question<\/span><\/a> as a \u201ctool to silence critics in Tanzania.\u201d Aidan Eyakuze, executive director of Twaweza, a civil society organization focused on citizen voices, says authorities confiscated his passport and banned him from travel while investigating Eyakuze\u2019s citizenship status.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks prior, Twaweza had issued and released results from a survey called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twaweza.org\/uploads\/files\/SzW-Politics-EN-FINAL-print.pdf\" data-versionurl=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190807151228\/https:\/\/www.twaweza.org\/uploads\/files\/SzW-Politics-EN-FINAL-print.pdf\" data-versiondate=\"2019-08-07T15:12:30+00:00\" data-amber-behavior=\"\">\u201cSpeaking truth to power?
