Over <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a decade later, when Amnesty International visited Mount Elgon, members of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Indigenous Benet <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">community were still living in temporary resettlement sites and reeling from the effects of the forced <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">evictions. <\/span> <\/span><span id=\"page32R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page32R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This report focuses on the plight of the Benet Indigenous peoples of Mount Elgon; however, this is just one of\u00a0 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">many cas<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">es of forced evictions in Uganda. The experience of the Benet peoples speaks to the broader need\u00a0 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for the Ugandan government to prevent forced evictions for all, in both law and practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Extract from p.11:<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page41R_mcid10\" class=\"markedContent\"><span class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Constitution of Uganda lists 56 Ugandan \u201c<span class=\"highlight selected appended\">indigenous comm<\/span>unities\u201d,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as of 1st February 1926, making <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">every Ugandan community indigenous. The list of 56 leaves out many smaller eth<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nic communities such as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Benet and the Basongora.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Benet are considered a sub<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">group of one of the 56. In official <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">documents, such as identity cards, the Ugandan government has <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">categorized<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Benet as a sub<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">group of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Sabiny people of Kapchorwa di<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">strict.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">They however have a different culture, including forest traditions, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">although they speak a different dialect of the same language. This categorization is used in government <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">communication, including in a report from the Office of the Prime Minister <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(OPM), which noted the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Benet <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201c<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8230;were the indigenous and historical forest dwellers of the high mountain forests and moor<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lands of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Sabiny community that were the official category of persons who were removed from the Mt.
