{"id":38766,"date":"2023-06-19T18:21:44","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T18:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=38766"},"modified":"2023-06-20T18:29:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T18:29:50","slug":"namibian-lawmakers-examine-bill-to-streamline-civil-registration-lower-age-for-id-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/fr\/namibian-lawmakers-examine-bill-to-streamline-civil-registration-lower-age-for-id-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"Namibian lawmakers examine bill to streamline civil registration, lower age for ID cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ayang Macdonald<\/p>\n<p>A draft piece of legislation seeking to make changes to Namibia\u2019s civil status registration and identification system is currently in the country\u2019s parliament for first reading.<\/p>\n<p>Among the proposed changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/namibia-civil-registration-and-identification-bill-2023\/\">bill<\/a> which has been introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, is a reduction in the legal age for obtaining a national ID card from 16 to 14.<\/p>\n<p>Also, biometrics have been introduced in the process of enrollment for a national ID card, which is not stipulated in the country\u2019s current Identification Act, in place since 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Home Affairs Minister Daniel Kashikola brought the bill to the attention of lawmakers recently.<\/p>\n<p>According to government, the key purpose of the bill is to provide for a national civil registration system and for the issuing of identity documents.
