{"id":41034,"date":"2024-08-07T19:27:12","date_gmt":"2024-08-07T19:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/?p=41034"},"modified":"2024-08-07T19:27:12","modified_gmt":"2024-08-07T19:27:12","slug":"namibia-bill-to-grant-stateless-people-citizenship-tabled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizenshiprightsafrica.org\/fr\/namibia-bill-to-grant-stateless-people-citizenship-tabled\/","title":{"rendered":"Namibia: Bill to grant stateless people citizenship tabled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Envaalde Matheus<\/p>\n<p>Namibia\u2019s home affairs minister has tabled a bill that will grant people born with South West Africa (SWA) identification documents (IDs) full Namibian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Up to now, many of these individuals have been unable to get Namibian citizenship under the current laws.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security Albert Kawana tabled the regularisation of the status of certain residents, their foreign spouses and their descendants bill in the parliament on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is designed to help people who have SWA IDs but can\u2019t get Namibian citizenship under the current laws. It seeks to help long-term residents and their descendants benefit from access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNamibia still has individuals with SWA IDs who are unable to obtain citizenship due to legal impediments.
