Garissa residents without official national identification documents can now sigh with relief after the national government hinted at working with counties to stream line speedy issuance of the vital documents.

The good news came after a joint and highly consultative meeting held on Wednesday in Nairobi Statehouse between President Kenyatta and county governors.

The county bosses expressed their concerns that the election period was fast approaching while a larger percentage of the youth population especially in Garissa, Mombasa and Nairobi counties were yet to have identification cards.

As a show of commitment, President Kenyatta confirmed to intervene on the matter to allow more people to participate in the forthcoming general election process.

If the proposal sees the light of the day, then youths wishing to apply for national identity cards will obtain them at their county headquarters.

Just few months ago, several youths from North Eastern region blocked the busy Garissa highway to express their frustrations over tedious and humiliating processes they face when looking for the precious documents.
