More Zimbabweans acquire Botswana citizenship

The accounting officer in the Ministry of labour and Home Affairs Pearl Matome on Wednesday said more Zimbabweans have been given Botswana citizenship than other foreigners.Appearing before the Botswana parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Matome said of the 15,000 people who applied for Botswana citizenship, Zimbabweans represented 45 percent out of the successful applicants.
They were followed by South Africans, the Chinese, Zambians and Indians.
Matome said they had a review after receiving complaints from the public and have seen 2,210 appeals, with 1,148 approved.
Zimbabweans again led on those who were approved after the appeals, followed by India, China, South Africa and Zambia.
She said they have discussed issues of citizenship and visa applications with Botswana Investment and Trade Centre, which is responsible for bringing foreign direct investment into the country, , Botswana Chamber of Mines, Diamond Hub and the Directorate of Security Services.
