Namibia: Villagers left stateless, hopeless

MORE than 100 old people living at Divundu in Kavango East and surrounding areas have not been receiving pension grants because they do not have proof they are Namibian citizens.
One of the elders, Sophia Diwandamo (85) from Mutjuku village near Divundu, says she first applied for a national identification document in 1987 without success.
“There are always hiccups and other problems whenever I go and inquire about my ID and I am sent back and forth,” she told The Namibian. For now, Diwandamo says, she is one of the few fortunate elders still receiving a grant despite having no documents.
She however says she was told that if she does not have a valid ID with a photo by December this year, she will be taken off the system.
