Nigeria: FG confers citizenship on 82 nationals

Abuja, Aug. 18, 2010 (NAN) The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the grant of citizenship on 82 nationals. The Minister of State for Information and Communications, Mr Labaran Maku, made this known after the FEC meeting at the State House, Abuja. Briefing the State House correspondents after the meeting, Maku said the Council’s approval was based on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship (ACNC).

“In accordance with the provision of Chapter III, Section 26 and 27 of the 1999 Constitution, applicants who meet the requirements are granted Nigerian citizenship by naturalisation or registration.

“The ACNC at its meeting on 17 and 18 June, considered a total number of 136 applicants for both citizenship by naturalisation and registration. Labaran said 38 applicants who met the constitutional requirements were recommended and approved for citizenship by naturalisation, while 44 were recommended and approved for registration. The 44 who were approved for citizenship by recommendation, he said, were all women foreigners married to Nigerian men.

The minister said 54 applicants were stepped down due to inappropriate clearance report.
