GOVERNMENT has dismissed media reports suggesting that some border areas of Malawi have been ceded to Zambia during the re-demarcation exercise.

Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources public relations Officer Diniwe Zulu clarified that no district or parts of the said areas had been declared to belong to either country following the demarcation.

“The Ministry of Lands would like to correct the impression portrayed by an article that circulated on social media that reported that parts of Mchinji, Mzimba, Kasungu and Rumphi Districts of Malawi have been declared to belong to Zambia during the border re-demarcation exercise,

“The governments of Zambia and Malawi jointly carried-out the physical demarcation of the common boundary through the construction of concrete pillars along the entire stretch of 805 kilometres which maintained the same agreed boundaries as at independence,” she said.

She told Daily Nation yesterday that the two countries were yet to undertake as agreed, sensitization campaigns and the social-impact survey after the completion of the re-demarcation exercise.
