Nationality in Tunisia was first defined in 1914, when the territory was a French protectorate, and is today governed by the 1963 Code de la Nationalité as amended most recently in 2010. Since the 2010 amendments, the law no longer discriminates on the basis of gender in access to nationality.
Tunisia has reported to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on its efforts to increase the rate of registration of births in the country, in order to fulfill the right of every child to an identity. Even though the Committee did not make any specific recommendation on these issues, the CEDAW Committee noted its concern about continuing gender discrimination in the nationality law in 2010. The amendments of December 2010 responded to these concerns.
