Stateless: Kenya’s Pemba Community

Kenya’s Pemba community have been living in statelessness for decades. The consequences of being unable to obtain legal documents and citizenship have grave consequences for community members- unable to access basic services, register birth certificates for their children and excluded from financial services. Nonetheless the Pemba community has built extraordinary resilience of existing, despite having no official recognition form Kenya’s government.
