The Democratic Republic of Congo has deposited the ratification instruments of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC). During a ceremony held today at the Headquarters of the African Union Commission (AUC), the Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has submitted to the Office of the Legal Counsel, the original copy of the ratification of the ACRWC and the Protocol Establishing the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights.

In the context of celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Charter, this ratification acknowledges the ongoing efforts of the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child to achieve the universal ratification of the Charter by all African Union Member States.  It should be recalled that the Democratic Republic of Congo has signed the Charter on 02 February 2010.

Five countries are still to ratify the Charter, Morocco, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Somalia, South Sudan and Tunisia. It is the wish of the Committee to see these countries part of the African Children’s Charter family in the nearest future.
