Imagine not being able to vote, get a driver’s licence or even open a bank account. Suppose you were considered not to ‘exist’ in your own country, and being a person suspended in Statelessness. It’s estimated that over 100 million people in the Southern African region lack any form of identity and nationality documents.
One such person is our next guest, Sihle Collen Nxumalo. For years, he could not access the most basic of services because he was among scores of undocumented people in the region. Once his story appeared on Morning Live in November, last year, Home Affairs reached out to him, and today he has an Identity Document. Sihle joins us now, via Zoom also joining us is Leonard Zulu, UNHCR representative in South Africa.
