Parliament has been challenged to enact laws that resolve the issue of people who are not considered to be nationals of the country, officially known as stateless individuals.
According to international law, a stateless individual is someone who is ‘not considered as a national by any state under the operation of its law’ with statistics showing that over 10 million people have been affected under such circumstances worldwide.
In an effort to end statelessness, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is hosting a workshop in Vumba, Manicaland Province, where the organisation is engaging four Parliamentary Portfolio Committees to come up with an action plan on
ending statelessness.
In his keynote address, Deputy President of the Senate, Retired Lieutenant General Mike Nyambuya said legislators must enact laws that address the different challenges which may cause statelessness and monitor the bureaucratic behaviour in government institutions which issue identity documents.
