Namibia: Government advances legislation to combat statelessness

The government is moving forward with the Statelessness Determination and Protection Bill, a legislative effort aimed at addressing statelessness and ensuring that all eligible citizens have a legal identity.

Once passed, the Bill will address the issue of statelessness and invisibility in the country, Nghidinua Daniel, Executive Director of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Safety and Security, said on the commemoration of International Identity Day.

“All these efforts are aimed at achieving the goal of providing legal identities to all eligible persons in the Republic of Namibia,” he added.

In Namibia’s just-ended mobile registration targeting the San community, members of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa in the various regions of the country, 8,463 births were registered, while 4,868 first-time applications for IDs were received.
