The President Bola Tinubu-led government has directed the immediate withdrawal and deactivation of Nigerian passports held by individuals who have formally renounced their citizenship.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service to enforce the measure without delay for all affected persons whose renunciation requests have been duly processed and approved.

The development was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Alao Babatunde.

According to the statement, the directive applies strictly to Nigerians whose renunciation of citizenship has been formally endorsed by the President in line with constitutional provisions.

Tunji-Ojo explained that the ministry’s action is rooted in the legal framework provided by Section 29(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which outlines the process and consequences of renouncing Nigerian citizenship.
