Botswana is making progress in taking pivotal steps to enhance its human rights framework. Government officials and United Nations representatives gathered on Tuesday for a national consultation on the country’s accession to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights ( ICESCR) and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
The event, hosted by the Government of Botswana in partnership with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights ( OHCHR), the Universal Periodic Review Trust Fund, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR), reflected Botswana’s commitment to strengthening protections in line with international standards.

The consultation also drew attention to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, a crucial instrument designed to address the plight of stateless persons.
“Statelessness represents a fundamental human rights crisis that casts a long shadow over the lives of millions worldwide,” Yang said.
She praised Botswana’s proactive steps, noting the government’s efforts to align national legislation “robustly” with the Convention even before formal accession.
She urged Botswana to “revisit the Draft Botswana National Action Plan to End and Prevent Statelessness with a view to updating it and facilitating its effective implementation.”
