Uganda: Debate on Banyarwanda citizenship continues decades after independence

Several decades after Independence, many African countries continue to contend with perpetual cycles of conflicts as a result of politicisation of ethnicity, the problem which was compounded by European colonialism divide and rule systems, including land border demarcations. The colonial boundaries particularly split ethnic communities across Africa such as in the case of the Banyarwanda who were redistributed in Uganda, Tanzania, and eastern DR Congo. The Banyarwanda question is one of the unresolved questions in contemporary Uganda that is also polarising.
